VIC: Popular vote needed for Lord Mayor s post, says Deveson

Outgoing Melbourne mayor IVAN DEVESON says the city should join other Australian capitals
in electing its Lord Mayor by popular vote.

Councillor DEVESON, who will quit next month, says he'd give serious consideration to
standing for the position again in future if such legislative changes were made.

He says he has concerns about the current system of councillors choosing the Lord Mayor,
because deals are done and the best outcome's not always achieved.

The former Nissan Australia chief executive and Seven Network chairman says being mayor's
been the most interesting thing he's done.
