Fed: Another ex-minister takes lucrative post-politics role

CANBERRA, Feb 18 AAP - Former minister John Fahey has joined his former cabinet colleaguesin a lucrative post-politics career, becoming an adviser to merchant bank JP Morgan Australia.

His appointment follows those of former Howard government ministers Peter Reith andMichael Wooldridge, who took up jobs related to their former portfolios of defence andhealth respectively.

JP Morgan today confirmed Mr Fahey, who was responsible for the government's privatisationagenda, would work to secure government work for the US-based financial giant.

"We believe that John, as a highly respected figure in Australian and internationalpolitical and business circles, will bring terrific insight to the Australian senior managementteam," Asia Pacific chairman Ralph Parks said in a joint statement with senior countryofficer, Scott Reid.

Mr Fahey, a former NSW premier, retired from politics at the last election after servingas finance minister throughout the Howard government's first two terms.

He retired after having a lung removed to cancer.

Mr Reith was hired as a consultant with Australia's biggest defence contractor Tenixwhile Mr Wooldridge landed a similar role with the Royal Australian College of GeneralPractitioners.

Their appointments prompted Opposition Leader Simon Crean to suggest Australia followother countries and impose restrictions on ministers from profiting by their access tosensitive information.

"It's not appropriate for ministers just resigned to then sign up and work for companieswhereby his recent knowledge of what could be very sensitive information can be put touse," he told Channel Nine yesterday.
